Things you can do to quit smoking! |
By Mira Williams
If your main concern is how difficult it is going to be to give up smoking, you already have placed yourself in a disadvantageous position. It is highly advisable to start planning how you are going to quit, when you are going to quit and what you need to support you in order to make giving up as easy and simple as possible. Giving up without planning or support is doomed to fail and every time you have failed, you will lose more confidence about future success in giving up smoking in the furture. The general advice is: Do not think that it is difficult, if you do, you will find it even more difficult than you think. There are a number of options you have that can help you to give up. The Internet is a wonderful source of information on what experts say about giving up and how individuals want to part with information how they stopped. The Pharmaceutical Industry wants you to do it by using their products so they also put their internet ore in Be aware that there are

The reasons why people smoke are well known, their misconception about cigarettes providing relaxation or concentration (ironically, people who smoke think that cigarettes actually can do both). Then there is of course the perceived high, when the nicotine hits the brain, which is false as the high is not a high but merely the reverse of the distress state of the body when the brain establishes that it has a nicotine deficit.
If you asked most smokers who have been smoking for many years if they would be interested in the following scenario: as by magic, they can give up cigarettes today and it would not bother them, there would be no craving because of nicotine deficiency, they would absolutely not miss them, nor would they put on weight or suffer from mood swings. Many, if not all, long term smokers would not take long to consider buying into that scenario. However, if they are then asked about actually giving up, they become evasive and show considerable reluctance to do so. An often heard argument is that they are not ready for it. When you ask further what that means, you will find out that the not ready reason is not really a valid argument. The main reason for wanting to give up, but not being capable of giving up is that long term smokers are convinced that they are not able to cope with life without cigarettes.
When giving up is considered, some of us immediately think of all the good times that they had in the past and they automatically associate those good times with smoking. Somehow they cannot believe that life is just as easy (or difficult, depending on your circumstances) without cigarettes. At all times, life without cigarettes is considerably easier, and if it is not easier, then it makes no difference to life if you smoke or not. That is the opinion of all those who have done the giving up successfully and who have become non-smokers. In order to make a successful attempt at giving up smoking, that fear factor of not being able to cope with everyday life should be dealt with. In order to counteract the fear factor, it would be an idea to list all the positive things that may be experienced as a result of giving up. There usually are quite a few of those. The positives usually include: no more worries about smoking-related health problems, more money, no more bad smelling clothes, hair, rooms or houses, no more bad breath, no more bad taste, no more feelings of being irritable and irate. When considering all those positive things, the fear usually relents somewhat and the prospect of becoming a non smoker will become more and more attractive.
In order to quit the tobacco successfully, it is advisable to make a list of all those benefits that you expect to experience from giving up. As part of the preparation, consult that list every day and analyze each item further, trying to imagine that you already have stopped and that the benefits are already happening.
