The Detrimental Effects Of Smoking Tobacco Cigarettes
By Rhonda Mitchel

If you have ever conducted any research on the best ways to stay youthful looking even as you get older, then you have probably already discovered that drinking plenty of clean water, limiting exposure to the sun and eating a healthy diet are a must. You also probably already know that smoking cigarettes is one of the worst things you can do to your skin even if you follow the other guidelines like water, diet and sunblock.

The skin is actually considered an organ of the body just like the lungs, heart, and so many others. We know that smoking can damage many or all of your organs to some extent, some more than others. Smoking can cause pancreas cancer and is one of the fastest growing cancers and usually causes death because by the time pancreatic cancer is found, it is already too late to fix it.

Two aspects of smoking that causes a lot of skin damage is the chemicals found in tobacco and the depletion of certain vitamins. One chemical that is extremely poisonous to the body is formaldehyde and it is found in tobacco among thousands of other chemicals like cyanide and benzene. The formaldehyde and other chemicals are transported through the bloodstream to the organs, the skin included. It has detrimental affects to be sure.

Vitamin C is very important for the body and smoking cigarettes depletes vitamin C at a rate of about thirty five milligrams per cigarette. The body does not produce vitamin C naturally, so if a person smokes and does not replenish this vitamin to an acceptable level it can cause problems. Vitamin C is essential for the immune system and it can also help to protect against things like heart disease, eye disease, and it essential for good prenatal care.

When a person smokes cigarettes and then stops, it is possible that after several years the body can repair a lot of the damage that smoking has caused, but this might not necessarily be true for the skin. Smoking speeds up the aging process of the skin and causes premature wrinkling and discoloration. Besides depleting vitamin C in the body, smoking also reduces vitamin A. Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin and damages the collagen and elasticity of the skin. Once you develop the wrinkles in the skin that are caused by smoking, they are usually irreversible to a great extent.

The best course of action to keep your skin looking young and healthy for as long as possible is first of all, not to smoke. You will have a lot better results from maintaining a healthy diet, drinking plenty of water and staying out of the sun if you do not counteract these precautions by smoking.
