The Benefits of Quitting Smoking
By Carlos Scarpero

The benefits and rewards of quitting smoking are enormous and the majority of the benefits and rewards are personal. When you finally stub out that very last cigarette, you are joining the millions of people who have successfully quit smoking and who have reaped the rewards of being a non-smoker.

One of the best benefits and most common rewards of not smoking is the increased health you will have after you quit. After about 5 to 10 years of being smoke free you can expect to have the same health as that of a person who has never smoked before. Your risks for lung cancer, lung disease, heart disease, heart attack, and stroke will be the same as the risk percentage of a non-smoker.

Your finances will improve while living the life of a non-smoker because you can expect to save thousands of dollars by not smoking. All the money you would have been burning through by smoking will stay in your wallet. If you smoked just one pack per day at the rate of $4 per pack, you were spending $28 a week, $196 a month, $2352 a year and in 10 years you would have spent $23,520. That is only if the price of cigarettes never goes up. But, we all know the price is only going to continue to rise.

You may have been a smoker for so long that you are immune to the bad odor of cigarettes. If you are like most smokers you don't sense that smell because not only are you used to it by now, but, also because smoking has damaged your sense of smell. After you have been quit for a while you will readily be able to tell if someone is a smoker. You will wonder how on earth you could have walked around smelling like that when you were a smoker. Your home, car, and clothes will smell so much better. Your breath will too.

You will benefit the rewards of being a non-smoker as well in social settings. Most businesses do not allow people to smoke in or around their property anymore. In fact, some states have laws against smoking within so many feet of an entrance to a building. By not smoking you will no longer be limited to where you can go. Sure you could go to these places before, but, as a smoker you probably didn't enjoy it as much because you were craving a cigarette.

Some companies are putting a ban on smoking. In fact, some employers will not hire smokers. If you have been out of the job market for a while you probably aren't aware that some job applications require you to answer the question of whether or not you are a smoker. Companies are cracking down on the employees they do have by forcing them to take a smoker cessation course or not allowing them to smoke during work hours.

The benefits you will have from not smoking are vast; all of the benefits were not covered here because for so many the benefits are unique and personal to each individual. For example, the aunt who had to quit smoking so she would be allowed to babysit her niece, or the father who had to quit smoking because the smell of smoke on his clothes aggravated his newborn daughters' allergies, the list can go on. Quitting smoking is full of rewards and you should take advantage of all the good that can come from quitting smoking.
